Mistake on Study Permit:
An application for amendment is needed when there are errors that would have been made by an officer when your documents were issued. You must have a study permit with the correct condition(s) in order to work in Canada. Without the correct condition(s), you will be unable to obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN). Please contact the immigration office for assistance.
TRV/ETA for Studying:
When applying for a study permit for the first time a TRV/ETA will be issued with your study permit. At time of extension, you will need to extend your TRV/eta as a separate application. A TRV is the Canadian visa stamped in your passport.
Failing a Course/Semester:
Failing a course/semester might affect your academic standing; this may also result in an unscheduled break in study. Any gaps during study may impact eligibility for PGWP and must be explained with proof.
Returning to Home Country:
You can return to your home country during studies, but ensure you have a valid TRV/eTA before travel
Working Off-campus:
You can work off-campus for 20 hours per week (May 01 to August 31, 2024) if you meet the following conditions:
- you’re a full-time student
- you’ve started studying
- you have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
Working on campus/ working during Holidays:
Yes, under certain conditions, you can work full-time on campus and during scheduled breaks.
Getting a Co-op Work Permit:
Apply for a co-op work permit separately; it's not automatic with a study permit. If you did not receive a co-op work permit upon arrival and your program requires a co-op work permit you will have to apply and receive this before your co-op term begins. Contact the immigration office for guidance.
Extending Study Permit:
Apply for an extension before your current permit expires to maintain valid status. It is recommended that you apply at least 2-3 months in advance, contact the immigration office for assistance.

SIN Card Application/Renewal:
Yes, you need a SIN card to work; apply or renew in person at Service Canada.
Expired Study Permit:
If your study permit is expiring soon, apply for an extension in advance.
Expiring Passport:
Renew your passport before applying for any visa or permit.
Inviting Parents for Convocation:
The Registrars office will provide a letter of convocation closer to graduation. This can be used to invite your parents, with an application for visitor visa that you will file with IRCC. Contact the immigration department for guidance.
Full-Time Student Enrollment:
Typically, full-time status requires a minimum number of credit hours; check for your specific program with the academic department.
Duration of PGWP:
The length depends on the duration of your study program; up to three years is common eligibility for 16-month in study duration. This can be done as 2 program of study that are 8 months each in duration.
Difference Between Scheduled and Unscheduled Break:
Scheduled breaks are planned in the academic calendar; unscheduled breaks may be due to unforeseen circumstances.
Stopping Work After Studies:
You must stop working when you receive your final grades. You may resume work if you had a valid application at time of application for PGWP and have submitted your application for PGWP with IRCC.
